Love

You heard me say it tonight, and here it is in writing.

I love you both.

I am extremely blessed to have you in my life, and I can't imagine my life without you.

I am extremely blessed to have three wonderful beings to love, and three wonderful beings that love me back. Love is within, and it's what keeps me alive.

We are living precious moments

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/shelley-emling/things-empty-nesters-want-parents-of-little-kids-to-know_b_6526292.html?1422273497&ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000037

As of this week, I'm the mother of a 20-year-old. This is also the week when my oldest heads off to Amsterdam, where he'll attend a new (very small) university. After a year at a very large university in Boston, he decided theater-style lecture halls packed with hundreds of students weren't for him.
Just as I did when he went off to college the first time, I find myself trying to conjure up memories of my son's first steps, first words, how hard he laughed that time I fell out of the kayak, how he played the "Toy Story" soundtrack incessantly on the piano to unwind, and how he alone never failed to ask me about my day when I walked in the door from work.
The sad reality is -- it's all a bit fuzzy.
As I've often said, you think you'll remember every key moment of your kids' lives -- but you won't. Oddly enough, I can recall the theme song to "Gilligan's Island" but I find it nearly impossible to draw out of cold storage a memory of my oldest kid's first bike ride. Didn't he used to hate eggs? I don't know. I really can't remember.
And that's why I've decided to put forth a bit of advice from parents who've already raised their kids to those who are still in the trenches. The first piece of advice is mine (I have three kids) and the rest is from good friends with grown children. Have anything to add? Please do so in comments.
1. In addition to marking down your child's first words, record the first conversations you had with them about whether or not there's a Santa Claus -- or a God.
Often we're so busy obsessively recording every milestone during our child's baby and toddler years that we forget to take video of a typical family dinner, with everyone doing nothing but laughing -- or arguing. Think you will remember what your kid's bedroom looked like when they were SEVEN? You might. I don't. Believe me when I say this: These every day moments are really what you will want to remember after your kids fly the coop.
2. The older the children get, the more you realize how precious the time is.
"When they are little you feel they will be that way forever! Therefore, take as many family vacations together as possible. They make lasting memories of real quality time spent together. Once they go to college and have their own responsibilities, it just gets more complicated." -- S.W.
3. Get to know their friends.
"Encourage them to have their friends to your house. You learn more about your kids from whom they befriend than anything else. Be non-judgmental and open to discussion about anything so when they are away they won't feel like anything is off limits to discuss with you if they need to." -- L.S.
4. Have family dinners often and make them a priority.
"The dinner table is a place for sharing all that's important with unconditional love, respect and openness to discussing ideas. Make it a safe place to be heard and not judged." -- J.C.
5. At the end of every year, sit down with your child and write down their memories of the past 12 months.
"When they turn 18, get those pieces of paper out and look back on all that's happened." -- K.P.
6. Go to every play, sporting event, or awards assembly you possibly can.
"You never want to be that parent who had to work and, therefore, just couldn't be there for your child." -- A.G.
7. Listen from the front seat when they sit in the back."Don't comment. You will learn more about their daily lives when you are chauffeuring them back and forth to activities than you can imagine." -- A.T.
8. If your kid tells you a secret, and asks you not to tell anyone, don't.
"If you tell your girlfriends, it will get back to them. It really will." -- K.L.
9. Unplug when you're with your kids."When your kid talks to you, PLEASE turn off the cell phone and the computer. You can check email after they go to bed." -- E.K.
10. Help your kids figure out their strengths and interests."Try to help your child discover things they are truly passionate about, and then nurture those interests." -- S.W.
11. Be affectionate -- always."When your child hugs you, never be the first one to let go." -- M.M.

Loves of my life

I can not believe how loved I am. Weird to say. Really, it is.

Gerard and I have been extremely close to each other, and I'm at a loss for words with the bond we have. They say mother-son bonds are like nothing else, and this is the truth for us.
You're developing into a much more mature boy, though you still have tendencies to act like a baby. I know that's normal for you because you got it from me.....we like cutesie things.

Aubrey has always been extremely close to me. You make me laugh and cry at the same time at the thought of you being a mama's girl. I look forward to each of your drawings because you amaze me, and you inspire me. You're pretty, you're smart, you're nice. You are everything that a lovely human being should be, and I am so thankful that I know you....that I'm close to you....

I feel that Papa and I have been better parents in the past year because we have finally learned how to communicate with each other. That's even weirder to say. But not everyone gets it right early on. We never gave up, because we both love you. And we love each other.

This is as cheesy as it gets. Sorry....

But love is a "thing" I never thought I understood. Until this family happened.

All I want for my birthday is for our normalcy to return.

Come home papa, please.

I really can't feel inspired by anything. I am staying as strong as I can for the 4 of us. It's not easy, but I want you kids to carry on as normally as possible. I will turn down requests to buy this and that and we will tone down on eating out. I don't want Aubrey's birthday ruined so we will do something nice. I don't know what. But without papa, I am sad and weak.

The night of his arrest has led me to day after day of challenge to keep going. To keep hope. To be strong. It's so hard.

Yet I feel like our bond has strengthened. We want you back papa.

Bad week

We had such a big blow in our lives.
I can't bring myself to ever share it here, as I don't want to immortalize it.
But I hope it changes all of us for the better.

This made me cry (a little) and smile a lot

Your Brother’s Opinion Of The Guy You Date Is The Most Important Of All

Brothers and sisters form a weird relationship. Women who grow up alongside men inherit distinct traits and personality quirks that can only come from years of flipped toilet seats and stepping on Hot Wheels.

While there will always be that special relationship between sister and sister, the one of brother and sister is just as exclusive and binding in its own distinct ways.

With a boy around all the time, it’s years of car fights, action movies and punches to the gut. It’s a sibling rivalry of girl vs. boy and who can do it better.

Because no pair of siblings (not even sister and sister) has ever gone through life without at least one moment when they legitimately plotted the other’s death.

No sibling ever has ever gone through life without feeling that extreme hate for someone that shares the same blood, that looks just like him or her.

Siblings were our first real competition, our first enemies. They taught us how to fight and take a hit. We didn’t scream at each other; we fought. We didn’t take each other’s clothes, we took each other’s Nintendo controls.

For a long time, you both might even go your separate ways. He absorbs into his world and you into yours. So isn’t it weird when you wake up one day and the one guy you wanted to kill is theonly man whose opinion matters?

Why is that? Why, now, does his opinion matter so much? Why is he such an important judge of the man you will one day bring home?

Because he is an extension of yourself. If your brother thinks he’s a douchebag, then don’t you begin to think that a little too? If our brothers see the guy for the man he really is, doesn’t that opinion matter almost as much as your blinded one? Our brothers are the male counterparts in us, the ones who also have to approve and like him.

Because if we were men, we’d probably be a lot like our brothers. If we were men, we would want to be friends with them.

We were raised by the same parents, cut from the same cloth, bred from the same womb and belong to the same gene pool. And if our brother doesn’t like him, then he’s just not cool.

Your brother won’t fall for the “parent act” (charm)

Unluckily, for whomever you’re bringing home, the sweet-and-charming act he put on for your parents doesn’t work on your brother. He sees him for who he is the moment they shake hands.

He knows him on that level that all guys just distinctly know each other — and he immediately knows what kind of guy he is. He knows if they’d be friends, bros or if he’s just a douchebag.

Thus, your parents’ approval is only good for how well he can charm his way through life. Your brother’s approval tells you what kind of guy he really is.

Because they should want to hang out

If he can’t hang with your brother then, in a way, he can’t really hang out with you. This is the guy you hung out with your whole life, who molded you, watched TV with you on Saturday mornings, spent vacations together, forced to find each other fun for a week.

Your brother is the ultimate hang out — and you’re going to be hanging out with him the rest of your life — so if your man can’t hang out, why are you even trying to add him to the club?

He will be able to evaluate him on things you can’t see or understand

While you see him for the boyfriend he is, your brother will see him for the man he is. He is able to judge what’s real and what’s f*cking bullsh*t.

He will know if he’s capable of raising a family or if he’ll stay by your side. Your brother will know him on the levels you’re blinded to by love or attraction.

He sees him as a person, not a love interest. He sees him as a man, not your man. He sees him as the stranger trying to enter into the family home and his opinion is like having to form your own all over again.

Because you love your brother

After so many years of fighting and plotting each other’s deaths, you forget that you do actually love him. You only have the utmost respect and adoration for a man who used to be your sworn enemy.

His opinion is sacred because his opinion matters because he matters. His opinion is realer than your parents’, your friends’ and your own, because he’s the one guy who knows you better than this guy ever really will.
